Cultural Fusion Remodel in the Albuquerque Mountains

A collaborative remodel that blends Native American heritage, Swedish elegance, and inventive craftsmanship into a kitchen that’s as functional as it is personal. Our clients—a Native American tribal liaison and his Swedish wife—wanted a space that honored both cultures and their mountain lifestyle. The result is a bold, one-of-a-kind kitchen that feels handcrafted and lived-in.

Signature Features

  • Hand-painted tile backsplash

    • 151 hand painted tiles designed and painted by the homeowner.
    • First kiln firing was perfect; a second batch was over-fired and half the tiles had to be repainted to match.
    • The final installation is a vivid, expressive centerpiece that transforms their kitchen into a work of art.
  • Custom cabinetry with cultural etching

    • Doors sandblasted with his Native American breastplate motif—inspire by an actual breastplate he was repairing, hanging on their fireplace.
    • Her Swedish influence appears as a delicate flower motif etched from a wine-glass impression on doors by the window.
    • Soft maple slab doors in a (pinkish-gray tone: warm grain) with clean lines. Soft maple is non-yellowing, unlike hard maple.
  • Durable, practical steel-frame bases

    • Signature angled base design adapted where needed for short runs and corners; some runs converted to straight while preserving steel frames.
    • Open-to-floor steel frames eliminate toe-kick cavities—ideal for a mountain home prone to mice and moisture.
    • Pull-out drawers reveal an open floor underneath—no hiding places for pests.
    • Smart Features include a Pop-up appliance garage and custom hood vent over the arched opening.
  • Thoughtful custom details

  • Layout change: removed a hallway wall to create an open feel and sit-down eating area, improving flow and storage in a compact footprint.

  • Balancing two cultural aesthetics required close collaboration with clients to ensure authenticity and cohesion.

Outcome

A highly personal kitchen that marries art and function. The homeowner’s hand-painted backsplash and cultural etchings make the space uniquely theirs, while durable materials and practical design solve real-life problems. This project demonstrates how bold, personal ideas—handled with craftsmanship and flexibility—turn a remodel into a meaningful work of art.
